It took us seven hours to drive to Kenwood from Southern California, and each time we stopped to stretch our legs, the Ridgebacks bounded out of the car, noses in the air, sniffing, excited, “Is this it? Are we here?” By the fourth stop, they stopped getting quite so excited. Maybe this our vacation? Maybe we just drive around and stop once in awhile?
But when we arrived at the beautiful gated vacation rental with 2 acres of landscaped property, a pool, and a tennis court, Nairobi and Sheila burst out of the car and took possession. Sheila checked the borders of the property, sniffing, looking for squirrels, and Nairobi ran around excitedly and then plopped down in a patch of sun to survey his new paradise.
While the Ridgebacks guarded the property, barking at anyone who came to their front door, Henie and I were squired around to wineries, fabulous dinners, and great conversations with the winemakers.
It’s amazing how quickly dogs get used to 2 acres—and a mansion. Each time we drove away to visit a winery, both dogs came to the front window to watch our departure. We’ll just wait here in the big house until you return.
Many thanks to everyone who made our stay so delightful! The Ridgebacks and I salute you!
